For a long time the Korean scientific community resisted working with creationists due to the fear of giving the movement more credibility. However, silence is no anymore an option.

The STR has been fighting to eliminate the content on evolution from textbooks, including the discovery that the feathered Archaeopteryx was an ancestral bird. This is only one aspect of how the concept of development has changed.

What is Evolution?

Evolution is a scientific theory that explains the changes in the genetic traits of living organisms over time. The theory is based on the fact that living organisms adjust to their environment, which could result in variations in genes or even whole genomes. Over the course of many generations the changes could result in the emergence of new species. Natural selection is the dominant theory of evolution. It describes how individuals with traits that are advantageous are more likely to reproduce and survive than those with less advantageous traits. Over time, this differential reproduction may lead to the development of entirely new species.

The word "evolution" originates from Latin for revealing or unrolling has been used in a variety of different ways as the concept has evolved in both science as well as elsewhere. Early evolutionists, such as Jean Baptiste de Lamarck and Erasmus Darwin (Charles's grandfather) believed that the existing species evolved into new species in a certain way. Etienne Geoffroy St-Hilaire, Lamarck's embryologist pupil who invented the term "transmutation" to describe this theory. Charles Lyell, in his Principles of Geology, published in 1833, attacked the concept of evolution and borrowed the term from Geoffroy's student.

In recent years evolutionary biologists have defined evolution as a process that occurs when living organisms develop traits that enhance their chances of survival or ability to reproduce offspring. As time passes, this genetic variability can lead to the emergence of entirely new physical or biological traits in the population. Natural selection is the mechanism that triggers the most evolutionary changes. However non-genetic changes like the increase in the muscle mass as a result of exercise or diet cannot be considered to be examples of evolution since they are not inherited by future generations.

Despite the fact that evolution has withstood the test of time and thousands of scientific studies Creationists have taken advantage of the idea that evolution is controversial to claim that it shouldn't be taught in school. Why is Evolution Important?

It is important to remember that evolutionary biology doesn't interfere with religious beliefs since it only deals with physical objects, events and processes.

Many religious people have discovered a way to reconcile evolution with their convictions. Certain Christians for instance believe that God created everything through evolution and that humans have an ancestry that is shared with other animals.

It is essential that scientists and educators speak out for the teaching evolution. In some countries, anti-evolution sentiment has been growing. In the United States some states have taken steps to limit the teaching evolution. In South Korea, a group called the Society for Textbook Revise (STR) which is an offshoot from the Korea Association for Creation Research, is campaigning for the elimination of textbook content on the evolution of horses as well as the avian ancestral Archaeopteryx.

While these are troubling developments, it is also important to keep in mind that the evidence for evolution is overwhelming. The evidence comes from a diverse range of sources, including fossils, genetic studies and the behavior of living organisms. Other scientists independently verify the evidence.

The majority of scientists supports the theory of evolution. This belief is based on many different reasons. Scientists study evolution to discover practical solutions such as developing new drugs or enhancing existing ones. Others do this to improve the lives of animals and plant species, mostly to benefit of humans. Some scientists are just curious, while others hold a a strong religious belief in God.

What is Creationism?

Creationists are those who believe that God created the universe and everything in it. They also believe that the Bible is the word of God and should be taken seriously. Many creationists are Christians, but not all. Creationists generally fall in two categories: Young Earth creationists (YEC) and old earth creationists (OEC).

The YECs are perhaps the most well known form of creationist, and they believe that God created the universe exactly as described in the Bible. YECs hold that the biblical account of the six days of creation was literal and that the universe and the life on Earth were only created recently.

OECs aren't as popular however their beliefs are as intense as the YECs. OECs believe the universe and Earth are billions of years old, and that evolution is a myth.

Both types of creationism deny that scientific theories such as natural selection and abiogenesis can explain the origins of life on Earth. They claim that evolution is not possible because it would require an extraordinary event, and that the founders of modern science rejected miracles out of fear that they would lose credibility.

Some creationists accept naturalistic evolutionary as well as special creation, and consider their views to be "theistic evolution.” This is also known as "continuous evolutionism" or the "evolution of the created species." The theory suggests that God creates species from scratch and then allows them to evolve over time. In the end these evolutionary changes will create new species that are identical to the original species.

Others believe that God created the universe and all living things during a single event, called the Great Flood.  에볼루션 무료체험  believe that all the original species were created at the same moment and that they gradually evolved. They reject the idea of abiogenesis and claim that self-replicating living cannot come from nonliving matter.

In general, creationists are against teaching evolution in schools. This is supported by a variety of professional organizations which include the National Science Teachers Association, the Association for Science Teacher Education as well as the American Anthropological Association, and the Geological Society of America. Some academic institutions and scientists, however, are more flexible and allow both creationism and evolution to be included in their curriculum.

What is Creationism in Korea?

When people think of the concept of creationism, they often think of the United States. South Korea also has an anti-evolutionist group. Publishers of high-school textbooks recently announced that they would eliminate references to evolution from their textbooks. A group called the Society for Textbook Revise (STR) is an unofficial body that is an offshoot of the Korea Association for Creation Research and has been the driving force behind the move. STR has won its first victory in eliminating examples of the evolution of the horse as well as an avian ancestor called the Archeopteryx in textbooks. Its sights are now set on the removal of excerpts from Darwin's notorious finch research and on human evolution, too.

STR claims to have the backing of 4,000 families as well as individual members. Its aim is to root out what it regards as the "atheist materialism" that creates a bleak worldview for students. It also hopes to combat the influence of American Creationists in the nation. A survey of undergraduates studying biology revealed that half of them did not believe evolution. The reasons for this aren't entirely clear, but could include religious beliefs or the lack of creation scientists in the US.

The KACR achieved many things through its lectures and seminars in the past. It publishes a bimonthly journal called Creation and the book. The most notable of these is a text on the natural sciences that has an orthodox creationist perspective, which sparked interest in college communities. In 1991 an academic and minister began teaching Creation Science in one university, and it is taught to this day.

On August 6-7 in 1993, the same day that the World Expo opened in Daejeon, KACR held a second International Symposium on Creation Research. Six lecturers from abroad including ICR's John Morris, Duane Gish, and Steven Austin spoke to audiences of over a thousand. KACR and its members have given lectures on creation science in major seminaries, too. KACR is planning to create a Creation Science Education Center.
